Expansion Cv Plugs are designed to fit holes with a total diameter tolerance of -0 / +0.004”(.1mm). This tolerance is achieved with a simple drilling operation and secondary reaming is not necessary nor recommended. Expansion Cv Plugs have a one piece design for fast, easy installation.

Installation is accomplished by simply pressing the steel ball into the Cv Plug, causing the plug to expand, so that the plug lands and grooves press into the surrounding hole material.

These simple instructions should be followed when installing expansion Cv Plugs:

    1. Drill the installation hole to the recommended diameter using a standard drill with a 118° point. Additional reaming is not necessary. The ‘as drilled’ surface finish provides for better plug retention and higher proof pressures, than does a reamed surface finish.
    2. Inspect the installation hole for proper depth, diameter and verify it is free of cutting oils, grease and machine chips.
    3. Place the one piece expansion Cv Plug assembly into the hole so that it bottoms on the 118° shoulder.
    4. Using the proper Farmington Engineering installation tool, press the ball into the plug. The ball should be pressed to a flush or slightly below flush condition. The correct tolerance is +0 / -.010” (0.25mm)
    5. Pressing the ball into the plug can be accomplished by using the installation tool with a hammer or an arbor press. For larger quantity production, stationary or hand-held pneumatic or hydraulic tools are normally used.
    6. Expansion Cv Plugs provide for reliable and consistent proof pressure performance. Periodic checks of proof pressure should be made to verify that the installation is correctly accomplished.

Removal

Expansion Cv Plugs are easily removed by simple machining. The steel ball hardness is controlled to Rockwell 38-47C. Follow these instructions for easy removal:

  1. Drill and tap threads into the steel ball.
  2. Thread a standard bolt with striker into the steel ball and pull the ball from the Cv Plug.
  3. Drill and tap threads into the I.D. of the Cv Plug. Use a standard bolt with a striker to pull the plug from the hole.
  4. Check installation hole tolerances before installing a new expansion Cv Plug.
